Writing Workshop
During our fourth grade year together we will be writing pieces from a variety of genres - nonfiction and fictional narratives, informative and research texts, and opinion pieces. We will first explore each genre as a whole group by reading mentor texts, examining student samples, and practicing key writing skills together. Students will then craft individual pieces through the planning, drafting, editing/revising, and publishing process. A combination of independent work, conferences with me, and peer input will allow students to take on more responsibility as writers this year and develop their own 'voices'.
Current Writing Genre - Personal Narrative
During this unit we will focus on the personal narrative genre. Students will learn the characteristics of a personal narrative - a true story that happened to the narrator in real life! We will practice brainstorming and choosing "seed" ideas to focus on a small moment that can be expanded with descriptive details. Students will also practice including dialogue in these short writing pieces!

Handwriting and Keyboarding
Throughout the year we will be producing both handwriting and typed pieces in writing workshop. To build students' keyboarding skills we will be using Google Classroom, Google Docs, and other digital programs to create published pieces. Students will also be continuing to practice their cursive handwriting.
